Child Development is… • Child development is the physical, emotional, social and intellectual changes that occur in human beings between conception to adolescence from dependence to autonomy.
What influences who we are? • Temperament/Genetics • Environment • Birth Order • Models • Life Experiences
Temperament/Genetics • Cannot be changed; inborn (Nature) • Style of behavior • Not WHAT they do or WHY they do something, but HOW they do it. • Can be modified with maturity
Traits that are “Inborn” • Activity Level • Distractibility • Adaptability • Negative Persistence • Initial Withdrawal • High Intensity • Rhythm • Sensitivity to Stimuli • Mood
Environment • The “Nurture” aspect of development • The type of environment a child is exposed to (emotional, social, physical) • Most important influence is family
Birth Order • What was your birth order? Where you the oldest? youngest? middle? • Many studies now relate birth order to personal development • What your birth order says about you…
Models • People of influence that impact development • Who you look up to and mimic/learn behaviors from • Includes parents, family members, friends, other role models (coaches, babysitters etc) • Do you think TV could be considered a model?
Life Experiences • What happens during your life affects who you are • All experiences are different and can influence how you develop
Assignment- Journal Entry • Examine your present personality – what you like and do not like, how you react to things or people, what your habits are, etc. • Identify three or four factors in your childhood that have influenced your personal development and have aided in forming your present personality. These factors may be individuals, events, places, etc. • In 1 page, write about these influences and how you feel about them. • Include ideas that you as a parent or caregiver may do differently and what you would do the same with your own children or children for which you may care.
Preparing for Parenting Quiz You will each be given a copy of the quiz. Try it on your own first, giving your best guess for each answer (its okay if it’s not correct) When finished, pair with a partner to compare answers and come to a decision as to what you think is correct
