Background on Muon Campus plan • Earlier Plan had 5 Common Projects: • MC1 Building (GPP) • MC Beamline Enclosure (GPP) • MC Site Preparation (GPP) • MC Cryo Plant (AIP) • MC Delivery Ring Upgrades (AIP) • This plan has evolved in response to • Recommendations made at Mu2e DOE CD-1 review • Maturing designs for (g-2) and Mu2e • Recycler AIP was added in response to DOE recommendation and includes scope that was originally part of the g-2 project • Scope of Site-Prep GPP changed in response to DOE recommendation that resulted in acceleration of Mu2e civil construction schedule • Muon Campus projects plan actively orchestrated and managed via regular program meetings • Although the packaging of the projects has been in flux, most of the individual jobs to be done are well-known and mature • Aiming for Director’s review of full program in next few months

MC-1 GPP • MC-1 building to house g-2 and future experiments, cryo system for g-2 and Mu2e, and power supplies for some beamline components • 80’ x 80’ high-bay with 30 T crane • internal loading dock • floor stable, load-bearing to 700 T • good temperature control • 70’ x 70’ low-bay for staging, assembly, control room • Includes extension of existing communication duct to replace duct which is interrupted during tunnel excavation
MC-1 GPP WBS Total cost expected to be $9M, costing is mature
Beamline enclosure GPP • Civil construction of enclosures for M4 and g-2 extraction lines • Delivery Ring to Mu2e – M4: 10’ wide x 8’ high concrete box type enclosure with 16’ equivalent earth shielding. Base slab at El:728’-8”. • M4 line to g-2: 8’wide x 8’ high enclosure. Base slab slopes from El: 728’-8” to El 734’-6”. • Beamline power supplies from AP-30, g-2 and Mu2e. Low Conductivity Water extended from Delivery Ring. • Includes lighting, grounding, electrical power distribution, cable tray, fire detection, life safety egress, drainage and sumps. Installs beam abort.
Beamline enclosure GPP WBS Current estimate $9.2M, could increase as plans become better defined (beamline design still in progress)
A-0 Cooling Pond • Civil construction to renew the A-0 pond heat rejection capacity and provide capacity for the 13.8 kv feeder from Master Substation to F-3 Switch. • A-0 Pond – Restore pond depth to the original profile; replace pond pumps and intake; relocate and replace discharge. • 13.8 KV Electrical Upgrade – Install new feeder (24B) in existing Main Ring duct bank from Master Substation to the F-3 Switch Costing still in progress
Site prep GPP • Originally (early 2012) the Site Prep GPP included: • removal of an old spoils pile • relocation of KautzRd • installation of an additional power feeder • Issues since then: • items 1) and 2) above need to be accelerated in order to accommodate accelerated Mu2e civil construction schedule • items 1) and 2) above total ~$2M, not in lab's FY14 budget • unclear feeder is needed: the estimated (g-2)+Mu2e needs are on the edge of current capabilities and carry a large uncertainty • Current plan • eliminate this GPP? • move items 1) and 2) to Mu2e project • Mu2e funding profile can accommodate this • will identify scope to swap out of Mu2e • revisit need for feeder once beamline designs are more mature and power needs can be estimated more accurately • if needed, would require funding in FY16-17 to be ready for Mu2e solenoid commissioning in late FY17
Cryo AIP piping headers • Compressor and refrigeration systems • g-2 and Mu2e cryogenic distribution system • Reuse Tevatron compressors at A0 • Compressed He line from A0 to MC-1 building • Refurbish Tevatron refrigeration components to be housed in MC-1 building • 4 refrigerators to support simultaneous steady-state operation of both g-2 and Mu2e • Cold lines extending to both experimental halls to A0
Cryo AIP WBS Total cost $9.8M, contingency is well understood
Recycler AIP • Allows 8 GeV proton beam to be rebunched in the Recycler and extracted to the P1 line for transport to experimental areas • 2.5 MHz RF for re-bunching beam • Extraction kickers • Beamline connection from Recycler to P1 line • MI52 building extension for kickers (civil – move to separate FESS project?) • RF cavity production • Cavities must have active cooling • Reuse ferrites from MI coalescing cavities • Labor intensive • 7 RF systems (cavities + PA’s) for Recycler • 2 cavities for Mu2e to be installed in the Delivery Ring 13
Recycler AIP WBS Costing and scheduling in progress, costs of some pieces are well-known
Delivery Ring and Beam Transport AIP • P1, P2, M1 line aperture improvements for 8 GeV beam • DR injection • DR aperture improvements • Removal of unneeded devices such as stochastic cooling tanks • DR abort • Beam abort for Mu2e • Proton removal for g-2 • DR and beamline instrumentation needed for both Mu2e and g-2 • Electrical infrastructure improvements DR injection area 15
Delivery Ring AIP WBS Unescalated costs well understood, scheduling in progress, current estimate $9.5M
Current funding plan for GPPs and AIPs on critical path for g-2 • The additional site power feeder that was part of site-prep GPP ($1M) is not included here, may be needed in 2017 or 2018 longer lead time for RF on critical path for g-2
Status of Muon Campus project plans • Preparing for comprehensive Director’s review in next few months
