Definition: “The decrees of God are his eternal purpose, according to the counsel of his will, whereby for his own glory he hath foreordained whatsoever comes to pass.” S.C. Q. 7 The Final Cause of all is the Glory of God, Antecedent Will The means towards those ends are the Consequent Will of God The Decree is the determination to employ those ends THE DECREES OF GOD Effective Leaders
Genesis 1:3 “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” Isaiah 14:24, “the Lord Almighty has sworn, Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will stand” Ephesians 1:5,11 “he predestined us . . . In accordance with his pleasure and will . . . . having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will” Revelation 21:3 “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. THE DECREES OF GOD • Includes even the minute details, Matthew 10:29,30, “not one of them [sparrows] will fall . . . apart from the will of your Father” • Includes the wicked acts of men • Luke 22:22, “the Son of Man will go as it has been decreed” • Acts 2:23, “this man was handed to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge” • Acts 4:27-28, “They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen” • Are Immutable, Isaiah 14:24,27, “I have purposed, so it will stand” (Cf. 46:9-10) Effective Leaders
THE DECREES OF GOD • Human responsibility: WCF 3.1 “God from all eternity did, by the most wise and holy counsel of his own will, freely and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass: yet so, as thereby neither is God the author of sin, nor is violence offered to the will of the creatures, nor is the liberty or contingency of second causes taken away, but rather established.” Effective Leaders
THE LEADER AND THE TASK • A leader’s effectiveness = his ability to plan wisely • Nehemiah needed • To mobilize/motivate the community • An Intelligible Plan • He divided the task into manageable sections (Teams) Effective Leaders
THE LEADER AND THE TASK • Common Management errors • Underestimating the Task • Procrastinating • Cherry-picking • Doing everything at once • Prioritizing- not performing ballet Effective Leaders
THE LEADER AND THE TASK • He gave a task to each team • Delegated authority • Involved everyone • He coordinated the effort • Seamless sectors • Made use of • Natural Interests • Personal abilities Effective Leaders
THE LEADER AND THE TASK • Nehemiah recognized everyone’s contribution • Chapter Three is a long list of “credits” • BUT- he never credits himself! • Nehemiah was effective • He knew how to enlist others, to delegate responsibility, and to recognize others’ accomplishments Effective Leaders
THE LEADER AND OPPOSITION • The Reasons for Opposition- Some people • Are threatened by another’s success • Others are Jealous, or • Have their own agenda • Some feel excluded, or • Question the leader’s motives • Some are unchanging traditionalists • And, then, there is the Evil One Effective Leaders
THE LEADER AND OPPOSITION • Effective leaders encounter opposition. Nehemiah was • Publicly ridiculed, 4:2,3 • Threatened by violence, 4:7,8 • However, he acted wisely! • Posted a guard, 4:9 • Armed the workers, 4:13,15 • Protected the force, 4:16-22 • And led from the front! 4:23 Effective Leaders
THE LEADER AND OPPOSITION • Opposition from within! • People were hurting, 5:2-4 • Nehemiah was angry, 5:6 • But he thought before acting, 5:7 • Again, he acted wisely • First, private rebuke, 5:7 • Then, public confrontation, 5:7-11 • Finally, he led by example, 5:13-19 Effective Leaders
EFFECTIVE LEADERS: COMPETENCE • Competent Leaders “exercise authority to accomplish the Good” • Competent Leaders “need to define what is (Reality) and declare what will be (Future)” Effective Leaders
EFFECTIVE LEADERS: COMPETENCE • Competent Leaders do not simply respond to crisis, but also determine how you go about mission • Competent Leaders do what God sent them to do Effective Leaders
EFFECTIVE LEADERS: COMPETENCE • Competent Leaders are effective in giving a witness in the 21st century, in a time of denominational change, cultural shifts, and turmoil in our major institutions • Competent Leaders define excellence in the moment Effective Leaders
EFFECTIVE LEADERS: COMPETENCE • Competent Leaders define systems that will serve us well • Competent Leaders display the whole love of God, the affective and the effective, making use of all faculties (the whole person), all persons, and all gifts Effective Leaders
