Do you know what’s a STEREOTYPE? OK, some simple examples…
Some “adidas men” What’s the first idea? Maybe… “OK…. I’ve got to go now….”
OR… Do they really always fight?
Formally STEREOTYPES are described like this: Stereotypes are generalizations or assumptions, that people make about the characteristics of all members of a group, based on an image (often wrong) about what people in that group are like.
Mainfacts: • A stereotype can be embedded in single word or phrase, an image or a combination of words and images; • Stereotypes can be either positive or negative; • Stereotypes ignore the uniqueness of individuals by painting all members of a group with the same brush; • Stereotypes can appear in the media because of the biases of writers, directors, producers, reporters and editors; • Stereotypes of a group of people can affect the way society views them, and change society's expectations of them; • The media can be a powerful tool in creating or reinforcing stereotypes;
REASONS FOR STEREOTYPES presented in crime dramas: • Policemen: use any means, legal or illegal, to capture the criminal; • Policewomen: have forced their way into the police arena and , by nature of being female, are inadequate on the job, crumble under pressure and are unreliable as partners; • Criminals: have no regard for life, themselves or others, are the outcasts of society from poor social backgrounds; • Women: are victims of crime, not able to defend themselves, given to hysterics; • Old people: are victims of crime, live in fear, easily manipulated; • Teenagers: are perpetrators of crime; • Minorities: are involved in a number of domestic squabbles, as well as, responsible for the majority of serious crime.
Stereotypes about black people • Blacks are superstitious, lazy, and ignorant; • They are also unintelligent, loud, very religious, poor; • Many people say, that blacks are drug addicts; • Black people do most of crimes all over the world.
Those are only wrong stereotypes! They are the same people like we are.
If ALL the black guys are the bad ones, is HE the bad one too? We’ve got the first African American president of The United States!
Stereotypes about Gypsies • Gypsies run their lives loudly on the streets; • Most of them do not have jobs; • Gypsies have lots of kids; • They can all play the violin and dance; • The first thing comes to most minds is probably a tent camp with a huge bonfire in the middle, people dancing around it, and a fortune teller on the side; • Unfortunately, the second thought is a gang of brown people with bad teeth and dirty hair, who are trying to rob someone.
How to avoid stereotypes? ATTITUDE. The most important thing is what point of view do you look to others from. COURAGE. If you'll accept people that you don't know and you'll let them show you, who they are indeed, it will be the first step to prove that stereotypes are unnecessary. PERSISTENCE. Don't stop (or begin) showing to others that we should know other people better if we want to break "rules of stereotypes".
"Things may seem in one way, but they may also be in another way..."
GOD says: “Love your neighbor as yourself!” Love and respect each other because only we can change the communication between people and avoid stereotypes all over the world!
