  2. Mawi Asgedom • Born in Ethiopia in a small town called Adi Wahla

  3. Mawi Asegdom continued … • During his early childhood, Ethiopia was in the midst of a civil war with its northern region, Eritrea. • The village that Mawi lived in was right at the border of Eritrea • Due to violence his family fled to Sudan

  4. Ethiopian Civil War • Lasted from 1974 - 1991 • Africa, in general, has suffered from artificial borders drawn by former imperial and colonial rulers & the civil war between Ethiopia and the Northern region was due to border issues

  5. Ethiopian Civil continued … • Eritrean nationalists demanded independence from Ethiopia. When the Ethiopian government rejected this demand, civil war erupted.

  6. Effects of Ethiopian Civil War • Famine • Increased poverty • Massive loss of life • Lack of stability within the government

  7. In Sudan, Mawi & his family lived in a refugee camp • refugee – a person displaced from his/her homeland by war, political oppression, or religious beliefs • His family stayed in the refugee camp for three years before moving to Wheaton, Illinois

  8. Wheaton is about 46 miles from Calumet City

  9. Mawi attended Wheaton North High School. • He graduated from Harvard and is now an author and a public speaker. • In 2010, he released book one, The Third Harmony, of a fantasy trilogy for teenagers. • He currently lives in Chicago and is working on book two of his trilogy.
