Why are we here? • Revenues that support the County Road Fund have fallen dramatically. • The Road Fund supports 1,500 miles of roads, bridges, and culverts, including clearing roads in the coming winter. • The Executive is working on a modern revenue structure that will adequately and fairly fund the transportation that you and our economy need.

  3. Your King County roads The County road system is valued at $39 billion, and was built over generations. • Roads • Bridges • Sidewalks • Traffic signals • Culverts

  4. What’s the problem?Revenuehas declined significantly Lower property values mean lower road tax revenues Fuel-efficient cars, and fewer people driving means lower gas tax revenue Less tax revenue means less service

  5. How is it different than we expected? Road Services maintenance, preservation and capital improvement needs and annual funding shortfall $250 M total annual need Almost $165 M shortfall Maximize life of the road system $200 - $215 M need $120 - 130 M shortfall Manage declining system $140 - $150 M need $50 - 65 M shortfall 2015 budget means we cannot care for the whole system $85 M Revenue $85M 2015 Annual Revenues 2015 Road Needs

  7. What does it mean? Less maintenance work • Reduced preventative maintenance will lead to more expensive fixes later

  9. What are we doing now? • Focusing our remaining resources on safety and necessary maintenance • Managing our work more efficiently • Reducing costs by reducing service

  10. A step in the right direction The Executive is proposing some short-term assistance in the 2013-14 county budget

  11. Next stop: Olympia King County Executive Constantine continues to work with cities in the region to ask the State to fix the broken funding structure for roads.
