Overview of UPRM Program • Centered around Tools and Toys Lab • Courses • Outreach • Module development • Scholar selection
High Tech Tools and Toys Lab • 10 stations (7 operational) • Digital cameras • Oscilloscopes, Signal Generators, Multimeters, Power Supplies • LEGO Mindstorms • XY positioners • Courses on Computer Vision, Electromagnetics use the lab • Intro to EE course developed by CenSSIS on the lab • Visits from home-schoolers, schools, Pre-College Engineering Program • Need more space!!!!
Intro to EE Course • Developed by CenSSIS for the Tools and Toys Lab • Freshman course for electrical engineers • Emphasizes on introducing EE specialization areas at UPRM • Communications and DSP • Power Systems and Power Electronics • Control Systems • Electronics • Applied Electromagnetics • 14 students on 1st year, 28 students on 2nd and 3rd years • More space in lab = all EE freshmen in course • Scholars are selected from the best students in course
CenSSIS Scholars • Selected from Intro to EE course • Students very active in SLC activities and undergraduate research • Renovated undergraduate student participation in CenSSIS
Undergraduate Research • Development and review of educational modules for HTT&T lab • Development of camera mount and data collection
Outreach • Visits to schools • Visits to HTT&TL • Pre-college Engineering Program Electro-magnet circuit (a) Sixth grade students building a circuit by following the electrical Diagram. and (b) one of the ushers (a graduate student) supervising Sixth grade rs trying out the electronic piano.
Workshop Achievements K-12: • Created awareness among K-12 students of what is engineering & Motivate them to study engineering. Univ. Students: • These activities are performed with help from university students previously trained as ushers. • University students expressed their enthusiasm and willingness to participate in the activities. Most mentioned that they really enjoyed serving as ushers. Teachers: • Teachers that participated in the Summer Institute expressed that they learned a lot from the experience and plan to integrate some of the concepts in their curriculum
