Project 1: Self Portrait Josh Miller
What’s it mean? My Self Portrait represents me in a magnitude of ways. First and foremost, in the upper left hand corner is a grid array of boxes which contain my name in a crossword puzzle style. I put my last name first as this is my main nickname, most of my friends and past co-workers called my by my last name. Also I decided to include my middle name because I was named after my father and he is a huge role model to me.
Cont… On the opposing corner, the upper right is a set of music notes, I added this to my self portrait to show the importance of music in my life.
Cont… The skyline that makes up the bottom of the image is the Chicago skyline. This was added as a glimpse into my life with two different meanings. First, the city. For the majority of my life I have lived in an urban environment. Ranging from small town (on the left) to big city life (on the right). It shows my transition from pre-teen to present if read, left to right. The second way this skyline has meaning is its location. Chicago. Northern Chicago suburbs have been a new experience for me in the last two years. My family made a recent move there and has provided me with a brand new adventure, and has truly shaped who I am.
Cont… Finally, you may have wondered why there are two of me. Well this shows that I have a fun happy-go-lucky side but yet I have a serious side and can get to business but still have fun when its needed. Last but not least, is the colors. There is a common over tone of orange that prevails in the image, and that is because orange is my favorite color.
Basic Steps Used • Layers!! • Text • Chicago Skyline • Portrait • Graphics • Background
Text • Text was added using the Text command in PS • Change of font and font size • Second I spaced the letters out just right to get each letter in the right spot • Rotation command
Chicago Skyline • The skyline is an original picture that I took. • I erased the background and foreground elements using the quick selection tool and magnetic lasso
Portrait • I was forced to reduce the image size as my camera takes massive photo sizes. • Then I cropped out other subjects that were in the picture, such as my friends around me. • I changed the contrast and brightness to clear up the composition. • Then added an outer glow of orange using the blending options.
Graphics • I then added some miscellaneous graphics to fill in some negative space. • I used the different paint brush styles to create the splatter effect • The music notes graphic was found online, it only required a resize and a color inversion.
Background • The easiest step • Filled the background with black.
