Defining Terms Star VS Celebrity
Star • “Reflected the historical currency of the term • where the cinema is concerned. The term “star” • is used to imply a discursive interaction between on and off-screen image” (Redmond and Holmes, • Pg 8). • Personal Definition: Term referring to an individual who posses a classical talent (i.e.) acting, singing, athlete, or a dancer. A star is a person who deviates from the norm and posses an extraordinary trait that separates them from the rest of humanity. • Examples: Judy Garland, Muhammad Ali, The Beatles. Filmstrip

It encompasses a wider range of spheres, and the term is often used to simply suggest the contemporary state of being famous” (Redmond and Holmes, pg8). • Personal Definition: Term used to define an individual who does not posses a traditional talent but still deviates from the norm with non-traditional behavior. Voyeurism As A Sport Overall the star and celebrity culture has created a sport where voyeurism is the game. Just as surveying the object on -screen is the objective of film, surveying the star or celebrity off-screen has become entertainment and essentially a game that strives to see who can uncover the most about a particular high profile individuals Persona, Image, and Personality.
Mae West Background: Mae West was a vaudeville star, comedian, playwright, screenwriter, author, actress, and singer. Ranked as the 15th greatest actress of all time by AFI. She had a career spanning over 7 decades. . She was in 18 Broadway productions, 12 motion pictures, and wrote 5 plays in her career. Nickname was “Statue of Libido” due to her image as a sex icon.
