  1. Heat Part 1 Georgia Performance Standards S3P1- Students will investigate how heat is produced and the effects of heating and cooling, and will understand a change in temperature indicates a change in heat. Categorize ways to produce heat energy (burning, rubbing (friction), and mixing one thing with another. Investigate how insulation affects heating and cooling. Investigate the transfer of heat energy from the sun to various materials. use thermometers to measure the changes in temperatures of water samples over time.

  2. What is heat? First of all, Everything is made of Matter! All matter is made of invisible tiny particles that are always moving… • Thermal Energy- the energy of moving particles in matter • Heat- The flow of thermal energy from warmer objects to cooler objects. Thermal Energy is Heat Energy

  3. A hot bowl of oatmeal is left on the counter. After a few minutes, it cools down. Where did the heat go? Did it disappear? No, check the table underneath and the air around it- The heat just transferred from the hot bowl to the cooler table and air. Why does your hand feel cold when you hold a piece of ice? Heat moves from your hand (warmer) to the ice cube (cooler). The ice melts because its particles gain thermal energy from your hand.

  4. Producing Heat! Quick!!! Rub your hands together for 10 seconds!!! Stop! Now feel your hands. Where did the heat come from?

  5. Friction • Friction is a force that occurs when one object rubs against another object. The friction between your two hands rubbing against each other produced the heat!

  6. Other Ways of Producing Heat Electrical Electrical currents create heat: • Toasters • Electric stoves • Hair dryers Chemical Reaction • Mixing different kinds of matter and causing a chemical change. • Steel wool and vinegar • Hand warmer packets

  7. Producing Heat Continued… Burning Fuels- • Campfires • Natural gas heatingin homes BrainPOP Video

  8. Questions: • The force produced when one object rubs against another object is called ______________. • The energy of moving particles in matter is called ___________. • The flow of thermal energy from warmer objects to cooler objects is called ______________. Friction Thermal Energy HEAT

  9. Questions Continued: How do toaster ovens work? A. heat makes electric currents. B. Electric currents make water move. C. Electric current makes heat. Jessica just got out of the pool, and she rubs her hands together to get warm. Which way is she producing heat? A. Friction B. Electrical C. Chemical D. Fuel
