The American ‘Dream’ • Hakeem wasn’t highly recruited as a high school athlete. • He was offered to work out for the coaching staff at the University of Houston in 1980. • Olajuwon had almost immediate success by leading the Cougars to consecutive national championship games.
Olajuwon to the NBA • Olajuwon decided to leave college after his junior year because he knew he would be picked first in the NBA. • He was drafted by the Houston Rockets in the 1985 NBA Draft. • Olajuwon made an immediate impact as a rookie averaging 20 points, 12 rebounds and almost 3 blocks per game.
