Yucca Mountain By: Connor McInnes
What is it? • It is a mountain in Nevada, close to the California border • It was going to be a deep geological storage facility for spent nuclear reactor fuel, and other high level radioactive waste. • It was to be located on federal land adjacent to the Nevada Test Site in Nye County, Nevada.
What happened? • Even though it was only 100 miles away from Las Vegas Valley the plan was approved in 2002 by the United States Congress. • However, under the Obama Administration funding for the development of Yucca Mountain was terminated in 2011 due to budget costs.
Effects? • US GAO (Government Accountability Office) stated that the storage facility was shut down for political reason not technical or safety reasons. • As this plan is denied this leaves the United States without any long term storage facility for spent nuclear waste • All of the United States nuclear waste is now building up in nuclear power plants around the country with no where to store it.
