  2. Byzantine Glory • During the rule of Justinian the Byzantine empire reached its height. • When he came to the throne in 527 A.D. he wanted to restore the Roman Empire and govern it as a whole.

  3. Byzantine Glory Cont. • Justinian told Byzantine scholars to collect and organize the laws of the Romans into a code. This code was called the Justinian Code, and made laws even clearer. • Code allowed the Empire to operate with an efficient and fair central government.

  4. The Glorious Church • Justinian built many new harbors, aqueducts, and public buildings, such as cathedrals. • The greatest cathedral in the empire was the Hagia Sophia.

  5. The Glorious Church Cont. • Justinian was very religious and felt that god had chosen him to run the Empire. The church supported this and protected the emperor. • Justinians empire last nearly 500 years before it began to weaken. • As mentioned in Chapter 10 the church split in 1054 another reason for that was the use of icons in worship.
