  3. Introduction Why do we give oral presentations? Why is good oral presentation important?

  4. Why do we give oral presentation?

Studies show that we retain best what we see and hear together. • A good scientific talk provides the audience with knowledge presented in a way that best enables them to absorbed and retain it. • Oral presentations are interactive experiences between the audience and the speaker. • The audience has an opportunity to meeting the speaker.

  6. Oral presentation is important because it is • part of the fabric of scientific professional life • a means of accomplishing the exchange of knowledge and information

  7. If talks are not of the highest caliber • the communication is flawed • science is not properly served nor facilitated • negative consequences on an individual’s career

  8. The commitment A speech is a solemn responsibility. The man who makes a bad 30 minutes speech to two hundred people wastes only half an hour of his own time. But he wastes one hundred hours of the audience’s time – more than four days – which should be a hanging offense.

  9. The commitment includes • Proper preparation of talk and visual aids • Attention to delivering your message in the most effective way possible • Be responsive to the audience’s needs and level of understanding • How well you present your material directly impacts how well it is received.

  12. What to prepare? • Know the audience and the program • How large will the group be? What are the size and layout of the room? • Are they experts in your field? If nonexperts, what are the age range and educational level? • If a combination of above, what is the anticipated ratio? • Date, time, place and duration of the talk. • Is the program focused on one discipline or a cross-disciplinary or multidisciplinary view of the topics? • Will there be other talks on similar or related subjects? • At what point in the program will your talk be given?

Drafting the talk • A good talk has an introduction, a body and a conclusion. • Be thrifty and simiple: • Make every word count. • Use simple, direct, active words. • Never use a long word when a short one will do. • Keep the nontechnical language as straightforward and uncomplicated as possible. • Simplify your phrases and tighten your sentences.

  14. Use equations, math and symbols sparingly and carefully. • Almost by definition, scientific talks contain many facts and data, so it is a good idea to summarize.

  16. Ten Commandments of Visual Aids Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.

Visual aid shown must enhance, support, exemplify and/or facilitate understanding of material. • Information presented visually should be brief and concise. • Visual aids must be legible and clearly visible to the entire audience. • Two or three facts or points per image are the best; six are the absolute maximum.

  18. Do not load too much visual material. • Use color for emphasis, distinction and clarity. • Do not read your visual aids to the audience. • Be aware of the "life span" of each visual piece. • Rehearse your talk with your visual aids.

  19. Delivery The human brain starts working the moment you are born and never stops until you stand up to speak in public.

  20. Studies of communication show: • 55% of interpersonal communication comes from facial expressions and other body language. • 38% comes from vocal quality or tone of voice. • 7% comes from the content, the actual meaning of the words.

  21. To give a professional delivery: • use a well-modulated speaking voice and a conversational tone. • make eye contact. • smile. • vary the pace. • watch your posture. • use gestures.

  23. Tips for question & answer sessions • Encourage your audience to ask questions. • Repeat or restate a question from the floor. • Respond simply and directly. • Don't bluff. • Don't lose your cool. • If someone asks about something covered in your talk, answer anyway.

If someone repeats a question that's already been asked, don't answer it again. • If someone tries to turn a question into a long-winded speech, politely, but firmly, stop him or her. • Give permission for short interruptions, "for the purpose of clarifying a point or figure," especially with a smaller audience.

  25. If you run out of time, apologize for being unable to take every question. • Give a short statement to close Q & A session and thank your audience for their questions & interest.
