Examining Quality Studies in a Research Synthesis Kerry Englert McREL June 3, 2003
Coding Sheet Does the study represent a careful effort to eliminate threats to: Internal Validity (the study design not targeting the research questions, use of potentially flawed measures, events that may confound treatment, unwanted control group treatment or influence) External Validity(interaction of treatment and subject selection or educational setting) Construct Validity(inadequate design of variables, fidelity of implementation, anticipation and apprehension) Statistical Conclusion Validity(adequate sample size, violating assumptions of statistical tests, appropriateness of statistical methods, regression to the mean considered, statistical vs. practical significance)
Judging Quality • Total “yes”_____ Total no”______ • Quality Index ____________ • 9-11 “yes” = High Quality study • 6-8 “yes” = Medium Quality study • 0-5 “yes” = Low Quality study
Results • By employing the coding scheme, only 40 out of 118 studies were determined to be ‘high quality’. • The small number of high quality studies indicates the need for better research designs, and in-depth reporting on methods.
