  5. How Skin Protects the Body • Barrier against infection and injury • Help regulate body temperature • Remove waste products • Provide protection against UV radiation from the sun • Produce Vitamin D

  7. Cool facts about skin • Waterproof • Self-repairing • Keeps germs and water OUT • Keeps body fluids (like blood) and salts IN • Sweat is a way to get rid of unneeded chemicals • Skin is alive and renews the top layer about once a month

  9. What is in the Epidermis? • Epithelial Tissue • Outer layer of dead cells • Melanocytes • Produce melanin – a dark brown pigment (color) • Pores
