A Tipping Point in Education • Tipping point (physics), in which the system is the position of a physical object • Tipping point (sociology), is the event of a previously rare phenomenon becoming rapidly and dramatically more common. • In economics, the point at which a dominant technology or player defines the standard for an industry.
Under the leadership of Shah Ardalan, CEO at Lone Star College, University Park; The Lone Star College System has volunteered to be the first pilot site and will be the primary focus of the first year of activity. However, institutional participants representing systems of higher education other than Lone Star can participate to compare their requirements and prepare for future pilots.
Why Lone Star College System As one of the most innovative and comprehensive community colleges in America, Lone Star College System (LSCS) is the perfect pilot and sponsor. With five colleges, two university centers, six additional centers, and 11 Independent School Districts, LSCS enrolled over 85,000 students in Fall 2011. In addition to its quality programs, large geographic service area and diverse student demographics, LSCS is also recognized for its innovative partnerships and initiatives. It was recently selected by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to lead a statewide alliance of top-performing Texas colleges representing one third – or 235,000 – of all community college students in the state.

Show Me the CARFAX! • Through the EPS, the user should be able to obtain a summary of his or her complete academic history. • By knowing the path of the journey to-date, the directions to any destination may be obtained, regardless of the current location. • The user should be able to customize the view into his or her own data through the assemblage of task-focused applications. • Communication with the EPS system will take place through mobile devices, again, customized to user preferences.
Show Me the EDUFAX! • Just as CARFAX reports on the state of the vehicle, EDUFAX system would provide meaningful information regarding the following: • Current “state” of the student in terms of academic progress • Complete academic history including highlights and milestones of achievement • Any other items of interest and significance regarding the student’s education • By branding the system, people with an interest in a student’s accomplishments are able to call to mind quickly the tool to understand how to measure and compare where the student stands. • In being able to quickly call to mind the tool, people will be more likely to put it to good use.
