Implementation • It’s a matter of “taking what people know in one place, and combining it with what people know in another.” In other words, implementation is the activity of taking new knowledge developed through scientific research, and successfully integrating it into what people already know about doing their work, which they have developed over years and decades of practice
VCTIR Program • 2014 Research Investment • Core budget $14.6 million • Implementation $10.3 million • Other $2.3 million • Total $27.2 million • Research Staff • 49 Full Time Positions • 15 hourly/students • 3 joint/contract faculty • 6 graduate research assistants • 16 undergraduate research assistants • 9 RAC’s • University Partners
Implementation Touches all Areas • 76 Funded Implementation Projects • Quiet Pavement • Control & Recycling of Road Salt Mixing Pad Runoff • Connected Vehicle Infrastructure • Pervious Pavements • Composting Road Kill • Roller Compacted Concrete • Corrosion Proof /Resistant reinforcement
76 Funded Implementation Projects • Innovative Bridge Design – GRS Abutments • Polypropylene Drainage Structures • Training -- Implementation • Cold In-place Pavement Recycling • Innovative Bridge Rehabilitation • Technical Assistance-VarinaEnon Bridge Evaluation on I-295 (C) • Connected Vehicles – Dynamic Signal Timing • Road Kill Composting
We Must Sell & Promote“Our Story is Pertinent – Go Tell It” • Research Briefs • Research Summit • Get Excited • Get Invited • Get to know the Practitioners • Understand the Game has changed.
What have we learned? • It’s Not about the Money!! (tacit knowledge) • No one can Dictate Implementation • Get Permission then work with the practitioner • Few Research Projects are “Shovel Ready” • Things are changing---quickly and daily
First Come the Willing People • Sometimes they are not “that” willing • Then it may take some “s’plaining” • The great thing about Us is that when we understand the value to Us– we become advocates
Then comes the hard work • You need $$ “but” • Few are “shovel ready” • Planning • Procurement • Permits • Figure out the “bugs”
Sometimes things just don’t work • Can’t give up • Evaluate the problem • Re-group • Think • Ask for help • Then Find a “Dustin” • Dustin Dickens • TOII • Fishersville AHQ
“ Today, I am still implementing technology we discovered more than 35 years ago.” Michael Sprinkle
