Job Description • Counselors are responsible for providing a safe and educational home away from home environment. • They need to supervise and know the whereabouts of their students. • They also manage a residence hall unit. • Participate in staff conferences with faculty members.
Job Description Continued • The counselors are in charge of arranging and providing after school activities to promote their students moral, social, emotional, physical, and educational growth.
Job Description Continued…again • The counselors work with students on completing daily tasks, practicing proper hygiene, teaching proper social etiquettes, tutor students with homework, assist students with time management, and coordinate after school activities for students.
Daily Schedule 2:50 p.m. Students return to Residence Hall 3:00 p.m. See their teachers in Ely Building if necessary 3:15 p.m. Athletic Practices 3:50 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Checkers A high school students schedule 3:15 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Activities: King's Corner Chess/Checkers Card Games Arts & Crafts Hiking Public Library Baker Park Downtown Mall Bake Sale Cooking
A high school students schedule 7:30 p.m. - 8:45 p.m. Leisure Time/Activities/Sports Activities/Watch home games* 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Checkers 9:15 p.m. Back to Residence Halls 9:30 p.m. - 10:15 p.m. Shower/Clean Rooms 10:30 p.m. & 11:00 p.m. Lights Out Holiday Decorations Various Board Games Educational Field Trip Swimming Various Activities on Court (outside) 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Dinner 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Study Hour /Quiet Hour, Computer Lab in Residence Halls (with yellow pass from teachers) 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Organization Meeting/Workshop (Mondays)
Education Needed • High school diploma • 1 to 2 years of experience in a student development-related field • 60 credits from an accredited college or university • Fluency in ASL and written English Knowledge of the Deaf Community • Interpersonal skills
Education Needed Continued • Two years of college is preferred but is better to have 4 years or a BA (Bachelor of Arts Degree) • Knowledge of behavior management techniques • CEASD (Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf) Dormitory Counselor Certificate is required
Salary • Residential Counselors Deaf Services in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania • Salary = $35,000 • Residential Counselor • Salary = $11.00 - $13.00 Hourly
