Warm Up • Based on your notes from yesterday, what are three qualities of the epic hero? • Do we expect the same qualities or different qualities from today’s heroes?
The Epic Warrior • As American’s, we have many types of heroes. • The Anglo-Saxons recognized a single type of hero: the warrior. • This warrior embodies the values of the Anglo Saxons. • The main qualities of this hero: COURAGE, LOYALTY, and PHYSICAL STRENGTH.
Epic Warrior • Courage: by demonstrating courage, they could achieve fame and immortality. • Loyalty: to one’s lord and making decisions and guiding others. • Physical Strength: to overcome one’s enemies.
Warrior Society • Warlords protected his people from attack and led followers on adventures. • Warlords and his followers formed a tight knit group called comitatus. • The comitatus would offer complete loyalty to their warlord. • Warlords rewarded their bravest with treasure.
Oral Literature • Storytellers created heroic songs/poems that described actions of the warriors. • Minstrels performed these songs during banquets held in Mead-Halls. • Most people were illiterate, so these songs were their entertainment. • Warriors looked to these songs for inspiration and goals: win fame, be remembered after death for one’s actions.
Germanic and Christian Traditions • Germanic Tradition: -Mythology, depicting dark heroic tales. -No Afterlife: warriors primary goal was fame in his lifetime. • Christian Tradition: -Omnipotent God. -Afterlife. IN BEOWULF: We see a combination of both traditions.
Importance of Wyrd • Anglos Saxon times was strife-ridden and brief. • They believed that fate, which they called wyrd, controlled everything. • Wyrd : one’s ultimate and inescapable fate was death. • Hero: face this somber destiny with courage.
