  2. FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT: GOODNESS • A. That which is beneficial in its character and effects, morally worthwhile (Vine). • B. The good tree, good ground (Mt. 7:17; Lk. 8:8). • C. “Unprofitable” = Does Not Do Good (Rom. 3:12; Luke 17:10). I. GOODNESS DEFINED • D. Man’s view of what is good is deficient: • 1. Don’t consider what we say (Lk 18:19). • 2. Think an idea is “good” that isn’t (Luke 9:33). • 3. Think something is “bad” that isn’t (Mt. 21:12-13; Acts 8:18-23; Rom. 13:3-4).

  3. FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT: GOODNESS • A. Only God is truly good (Luke 18:19). • B. God’s will is good (Rom. 12:1-2; John 3:16). • D. God’s goodness moves Him to instruct & chasten (Ps. 25:8; Heb. 12:9-11). • C. What is the purpose of God’s goodness (Rom. 2:4)? So we may persist in sin (v. 3-6)? II. GOD IS GOOD

  4. FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT: GOODNESS • A. We are to desire goodness (2 Thess. 1:11 ASV). • B. We are to prove what is good (Rom. 12:1-2; 1 Thess. 5:21-22; Gal. 6:10). • C. We are to be filled with goodness: In knowledge & action (Rom. 15:14; Eph. 5:6-11). III. WE ARE TO BE GOOD • D. We must CHOOSE to be good (Mt 12:33)! It doesn’t happen by accident!

  5. FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT: GOODNESS • A. Avoids earthly consequences of sin (Rom. 1:27; 13:3-4; Prov. 13:15). • B. Develops godly character (Luke 6:35-36). • What could be better that being like God now? • Being with God in eternity! IV. THE BENEFITS OF GOODNESS • C. Leads to Heaven (John 5:28-29; Rom. 2:10).

  6. FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT: GOODNESS • 1. Goodness – beneficial in character & effects. • 2. God is the embodiment of goodness. • 3. We are to be filled with goodness. • 4. Goodness brings benefits in time & eternity! CONCLUSION: • Are You Preparing For Heaven? • “Either makethe tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by its fruit.” (Matt. 12:33)
