Improves access to available evidence base • Meet the information needs through provision of up to date- objective, reliable and comparable information on migration and asylum • Not normally primary research - instead bringing together, analysing and making accessible already available data and information • Contribute to development with other EU bodies of indicators and criteria to improve availability, comparability and consistency of information • Contributing to evidence-based policymaking
Reflects EU and national priorities • The Commission co-ordinates the EMN’s work, to reflect the EU’s migration and asylum political priorities • The EMN is guided by a Steering Board: • One representative from each Member State • One representative from the Commission • Observer (European Parliament representative) • Each Member State designates its own EMN National Contact Point (EMN NCP) • UK NCP located within Migration and Border Analysis Unit of the Home Office Science Group • National network members: academics, researchers, NGOs and charities

Informs EU policy and national debates • EMN Annual Policy Reports are a key resource for sharing best practice and comparing migration and asylum issues across Member States • The EMN “Misuse of the right to family reunification: marriage of convenience and false declaration of parenthood” report was used by UK policy to establish UK position at the seventh meeting of the European Integration Forum • The findings from 2012 studies will provide valuable comparative information to inform UK policy development • Ad hoc queries provide fast and timely information on the policy of other member states – over 400 ad hoc compilations now available
