  1. Building University Capacity in PhD Programs:Graduate Faculty Initiative Fall 2007 Maria T. Allison University Vice-Provost & Dean, Graduate College

  2. Principles: • To position PhD education within the vision of the New American University. • To develop structures that enhance the capacity of disciplinary expertise across the university, foster interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspectives, and facilitate high quality research among our PhD students and faculty.

  3. Graduate Faculty Initiative • Graduate faculty model becomes framework for PhD programs across the university. • By reframing ASU into a graduate faculty model, each PhD program has an opportunity to expand its intellectual capacity to include other highly qualified scholars/mentors for the benefit of PhD education and our students.

  4. Why Now? • Harness our intellectual strengths for our students; • Move from a department based to a discipline based focus on graduate education; • Create a university-wide framework that fosters consistency and transparency; • Build intellectual and communication portals within ASU and our external constituents.

  5. University Graduate Faculty • The University Graduate Faculty includes primarily current university tenure/tenure track faculty who have scholarly expertise and mentoring qualifications to engage in graduate education. • Other individuals (e.g., research professors, emeriti faculty) with appropriate academic credentials may be recommended for university graduate faculty status to the Graduate College Dean. • Current ASU faculty will be organized/reorganized around existing PhD programs (e.g., the Graduate Faculty in Psychology, the Graduate Faculty in Art History, the Graduate Faculty in Chemistry).

  11. PhD Program Organization: • Current structure need not change • Graduate director’s role is the same—coordinate admissions, petitions, etc. Graduate Faculty in Chemistry “PhD Admissions Committee” GraduateCollege Graduate Director/Coordinator

  12. Responsibilities of Graduate Faculty Graduate faculty status includes the Program Graduate Faculty and those within that faculty who are “Endorsed to Chair.” Program Graduate Faculty may: • serve on and co-chair PhD dissertation committees; • may teach graduate courses within appropriate degree structures;

  13. Responsibilities of “Endorsement to Chair” Chairing dissertations is a major responsibility that requires multi-year commitments to PhD students in preparing them as research scholars and educators. As with current policy, those endorsed to chair dissertations must meet the following criteria: • Demonstrated strong mentoring capability • Demonstrated currency and expertise in scholarly achievement • Consistent with current policy, recommendations for “endorsement” come through the PhD Program Committee to the Graduate College Dean for final approval. Those who are currently endorsed to chair will remain so.

  14. Special and Ad hoc Appointments Allows appointment of individuals of ASU or its affiliates (TGen, Barrows Neurological Institute) to the Graduate Faculty, on the recommendation of a PhD program committee, who are uniquely qualified by their training and experience to engage in PhD education.

  15. What Changes and What Does Not Change Changes University is organized around same graduate faculty model. Faculty from outside a department need not apply for affiliated status to be actively engaged in doctoral education. Faculty may be members of more than one graduate faculty group. Individuals from outside ASU with high quality credentials may apply or be nominated as members of graduate faculty. Chairing dissertations will not be restricted to only members of a department/school but will include qualified individuals with appropriate disciplinary expertise. What Does Not Change Operational structure of PhD program (e.g., graduate director, admissions criteria, admissions process, curricular expectations, dissertation processes). Role of Dept. chair in making teaching assignments, allocating resources, assigning TAs. Faculty with appropriate credentials within the university may serve on and chair dissertation committees Role of faculty in building curriculum. Process to approve “endorsement to chair”.

  16. Planning Stage: Spring - Summer 2007 Following presentations of graduate faculty model concept to University Council, Deans, Chairs/Directors, and Faculty Senate, a Graduate Faculty Planning Committee was appointed by the Graduate Dean, in consultation with the Exec. Vice President andthe University Provost, to: • develop/refine process; • help frame and implement the process; • develop communication materials; • facilitate building model for comprehensive and systematically linked recruitment/programmatic web materials, enhanced university wide web presence for PhD programs.
