What inspired Greek Art? • Geek society allowed adult males the leisure time to follow artistic pursuits. • The Greek city-states (except Sparta) were open to outside influences and welcomed new ideas.
Sculpture • Sculptors in ancient Greece excelled in representing the human form • Example: Venus de Milo statue from the Hellenistic period • The goal was to make the most beautiful representation of the human form
Architecture • Concerned with harmony and unity (the wholeness of things) • Temples consisted of a long hall with rows of columns on the outside supporting a low-peaked roof. • The columns were fluted with grooves
Main Styles • Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian
Literature • Homer (The Iliad and The Odyssey) • Epics-long poems telling stories of heroic deeds • Lyric poem- personal/shorter • Fable- short, concise tales that use animal characters to teach a moral lesson • Aesop- writer of Fables-lead to our fairy tales
