The Arts ToK
Four Key Questions • What is art? • Are aesthetic judgments subjective or objective? • How do the arts contribute to our knowledge of the world? • What are the similarities and differences between the arts and the sciences?
What is art? • Man-made? • Intentions of the artist? • Quality of the work? • The response of the spectators?
Art & Knowledge • Imitation (mimesis) • Communication • Education
Science vs. the Arts • Does science rob the world of mystery? • Are the arts frivolous? • Both are attempts to make sense of the world by looking for patterns in things • Science uses reason, arts imagination – but actually both ways of knowing are essential to both • Beauty and order… • Is science discovered while art is invented, or…? • Perhaps both are needed for a balanced view of the world? • What about progress in this area of knowledge?
Hypothetical Question • If a building containing the last surviving copies of both Hamlet and The Origin of Species were burning down and you had the chance to save only one of the two, which would it be and why?
