The Nielsen Co. said Saturday afternoon's game was seen by an estimated 14.9 million viewers on ABC. had more viewers for a soccer game on an English-language network in the U.S. That game averaged just under 18 million viewers Nielsen said only the 1999 Women's World Cup final, featuring the United States and China and played at the Rose Bowl, Ghana will advance to play Uruguay in the quarterfinals next Friday in Johannesburg, a game that will produce the World Cup's requisite surprise semifinalist. The U.S. undoubtedly will feel it was good enough to have advanced that far, but Gyan made the play when it counted. Tragic for the U.S., but a fabulous finish and certainly a goal worthy of a berth in the quarterfinals. The USA’s first loss of the tournament ends the team’s impressive World Cup run that saw them win their group over England, Slovenia and Algeria.
