  3. Reading • Goal: • Read a broad range of high-quality, increasingly challenging literary and informational texts. • Gain literary and cultural knowledge and familiarity with various text structures and elements. • Acquire the habits of reading independently and closely.

  4. Reading • Informational texts, poems, and full-length novels including, but not limited to: • The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton • Mississippi Trial, 1955 by Chris Crowe • Monster by Walter Dean Myers

  5. Writing • Goal: • Produce writing that supports opinions, demonstrates understanding of the content, and conveys real and imagined experiences and events. • Adapt the form and content of writing for a particular task and purpose and a variety of audiences. • Build knowledge on a subject through research projects and respond analytically to literary and informational sources.

  6. Speaking & Listening • Goal: • Take part in a variety of rich, structured conversations

  7. Grammar & Vocabulary • Goal: • Gain control over standard English grammar, usage, and mechanics. • Determine or clarify the meaning of grade-appropriate words and expand vocabulary.

  8. Current Studies • Short Story Unit • Literary elements and devices • The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton • IB Global Context: Identities and Relationships • Writing • Creative writing (short story) • Expository writing • Literary analysis and critique  cite textual evidence • Annotate, make inferences, analyze, apply • Commas and semicolons in compound and complex sentences • Vocabulary (technical and reading-based)

Grading Procedure • Formative Assessments • Practice assignment and activities (homework, in-class activities, quizzes, discussions, etc.) • Opportunities to improve learning, master a skill or concept, and get feedback • Informs instruction • Summative Assessments • Evaluate learning and mastery of a skill or concept in a unit (tests, projects, essays, presentations, etc.) • In most cases, there will be retake/redo opportunities • Authentic Assessments & Growth
