Welcome Parents of the Class of 2017 mgering@queenoftherosarybrooklyn.org Or through Option C
High School Information Meeting Agenda • 1. The Application Process for selection of three choices for a Catholic High Schools • 2. The Application Process for the selection of a Public High School, including types of programs and specialized schools Welcome Parents of the Class of 2017
Choosing a High School First things to consider are location and travel time. Eliminate all schools that are too far. Remember, the city provides bus passes but no school has their own busses. Go to mta.info to find travel time and # of stops. Second: your child’s academic ability Third: What is your financial situation and is attending a Catholic High School an option? Will my child only attend with a scholarship or financial aid? sspnyc.org All high schools have the same core curriculum and children receive an academic diploma upon completion of the program.
If your child is a strong student you would want them to attend a high school that will offer Advanced Placement courses for college credit. All high schools should prepare students who wish to continue their education. • Check graduation rates • Colleges attended by graduates
Catholic High Schools Each high school is independently run and has its own unique character. Tuitions are similar but vary. Each school establishes its own tuition policy and fees.
Some Catholic High Schools are totally private and have their own admission criteria. Many charge tuition above the average for “Diocesan High Schools” Convent of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan is an example. These schools are not required to administer Regents exams because NYS has agreed that their curriculum meets or surpasses the state standards. Some schools are coed , for boys only, or for girls only. For some children this is not a factor but for some it is an important factor. This should be your decision based upon your knowledge of your son or daughter. All schools who are not coed have paired with another for special activities – dances , school plays etc.. – ample time for socialization
Catholic High Schools Graduation Rate 97% overall with many schools at 99% A very large majority go on to college
Catholic High Schools Students selected based upon TACHS score, academic records, and teacher comments. Some schools require letters of recommendation. Make 3 wise choices based upon child's academic ability Allow your child to know your opinion is the final decision after the discussion of options occurs. This can be done in such a way that the child thinks it was their idea and decision.
If chosen wisely, students can make all three schools, or at least two of their choices. Do not select a school beyond your child’s ability. They will not be accepted. If choosing a school above your child’s ability be sure that the 2 other choices are reasonable.
Schools Selecting Only theTop Students Girls: Dominican Academy The Mary Louis Academy Boys: Xavier Coed: Archbishop Molloy in Queens.
Regis High School for Boys • Regis High School is the only all scholarship school for boys. This Jesuit run school seeks students at the highest percentile in all academic areas, who are active practicing Catholics who are involved in parish life and community service. • This school seeks to prepare young men for leadershiproles as members of the Catholic Church • Besides a separate test and lengthy application, if selected students move on to a second round which is an interview.
Cathedral Prep for boys • This school is a seminary prep school for young men who are open to the possibility of the priesthood • Small school subsidized by Diocesan Appeal funds to foster vocations • All who apply must be practicing Catholics (attend Mass each Sunday) • Need a letter from the pastor, as well as principal and teacher recommendations
Catholic Schools Average and Above Average Coed: St. Francis Prep, Christ the King, St. John’s Prep, Monsignor McClancy Boys: Xaverian Girls: St. Vincent Ferrer, Cathedral, Fontbonne, Notre Dame

This ends the meeting for Catholic High Schools Make sure your child has some form of ID for the TACHS exam on November 5 Parents who are not applying to a public high school are free to leave at this time. Thanks for coming the best of luck as you make your choices!
Specialized Test Day and Acceptance Students list up to 6 choices on registration card for test. Only need to bubble in on application Stuyvesant fills up first , followed by Bronx HS, then Brooklyn Tech, Math/ Science Engineering etc The computer starts with top scores and searches their first choice if no match found it moves to next choice until a match is found. Once match made does not look at lower priority choice. Acceptance is to one school only – be sure you only list a school you could attend based upon location Always SCORE first, choice, seat availability Cut off becomes lowest score where no seats are left – not predetermined
Performing Arts or Art Schools • Students audition for singing competing against others. This should be a real talent and not just that “I like to sing” Some students have been receiving lessons for years • Same applies for dance and drama – should be a demonstrable talent – not just what they enjoy • Academic records and attendance are also considered. Many of these multi-talented students are also at the top of their class.
School requiring special application but placed as a program choice
Who should audition? • Please be mindful of the deadlines for all these schools and the need to go on the weekend to audition • Please do not apply, file all the papers, and fill in the forms unless your child is serious about attending not only the school but the audition
Who should audition? • Please only have your child audition if they are very SERIOUS and have been trained in the arts • Only excused from audition with a doctor’s note and then student can attend the make-up session after more forms are mailed • If a change of audition is needed, the parent has to take care of that.
The list of audition schools requiring advance registration has been revised, and now only includes the following five schools: • - Art and Design High School • -Edward R. Murrow High School • -Fort Hamilton High School • -Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School • -Talent Unlimited High School
What is Priority Listing or Matching? Students list up to 12 schools and when a match occurs the student is accepted into that school only, starting with their first program choice. If no match when all choices are considered, the student is entered into supplementary round. Zoned schools are always a perfect match but MUST be listed in priority order on the application. If listed first they will be accepted, and no other programs listed will be considered. If not listed student is no longer guaranteed a seat in the local zone school and may end up in supplementary round
What is my zoned school? Zoned schools are based upon zip codes. If you live close to a zoned Public High School you are ‘entitled’ to a seat as long as you graduate from elementary school. Call 311 and find out your particular situation. Schools have a Z in code. Not every program is ‘entitled’ in the school. Not every zip has a zoned school. New York State mandated that low performing Zoned schools be redesigned. The former Eastern District High School is now the Grand Street Campus housing 3 separate High Schools. Many former large schools also have been redesigned to House several schools within one building. Call 311 for information
Williamsburg Prep in the old Van Arsdale might be a good choice for our students who are NOT in a zone. This school is close enough to visit.
How do eligibility and priority affect my chances of being selected? Computer selects by grades, attendance, then by priority 6000 students apply to a school 700 students selected by computer sort is by grades and attendance Selection for 100 seats first by District then Borough then all Boroughs Usually filled before it leaves the district!
Grades do not overcome eligibility priority If a program says open to Manhattan residents only – computer will never even see name or application of someone in Brooklyn or Queens Continuing schools: priority given to those already attending – all are accepted either no seats or a few seats left. VERY SLIM CHANCE
If a new small school states that student and parent must attend the information session, then you can get priority. The opposite then is true. If you do not attend you will not be given priority and most likely will not be accepted. They take attendance at meetings.
PHS Programs Students may select up to 12 programs. These can be Ed-op, screened , unscreened, or charter schools. This is separate from the Specialized Schools and La Guardia HS The programs chosen can be from the same school or from different schools. Read the information for each school and program carefully to be sure your child is eligible. Otherwise no match can occur and choice is lost.
Sample Application 0 Specialized school o LaGuardia
NO CHOICE after zoned school will be considered – choices 10,11,12 Remember a zoned school IS A PERFECT MATCH. LIST IT LAST IF YOU HAVE A ZONED SCHOOL
Proofreading • Be sure the language is English • Be sure that you are eligible – check priority and type of program • Be sure zoned school is not first because it is a perfect match – in this application choices after Z not even considered • List in order of PREFERENCE
What is an Ed-op School? These schools are required to accept students of all abilities ½ or 50% are selected randomly by the computer ½ or 50% are selected by the school Looking for Bell Curve…………
What are screened programs? These are most competitive school after the Specialized: Townsend Harris, Benjamin Cardoza, Bard, NEST, Manhattan Village, etc. Selection based upon academic record and attendance. If your child has less than a 94% GPA for the 7th Grade, it is not likely that your child will be accepted. School gives range of scores of accepted students. Schools also list any special criteria required If student not in range then it is NOT a good choice.
What are Limited Unscreened programs? Priority is given if you attend the information session STUDENTS CHOSEN AT RANDOM BY A COMPUTER Good for average student - no screening by academic grades – again a lottery by computer
What are charter schools? Formed by a group or individuals who apply for a charter to operate in NYS Selection Method – lottery by computer recommended you visit if stated in handbook
What are New Schools? The directory continues to add pages and grow. New schools can form inside an existing HS or JHS Usually have a theme and like the charter schools are not open long enough to have statistics on graduation rates etc.
What happens in round one? Students who applied to any of the Specialized schools are matched if selected. Students receive either ONE match from their application, or are entered into the supplementary round. Students who auditioned at LaGuardia are notified of acceptance into various arts that they auditioned for. May be selected for more than one and choose art category they will accept ( if selected).
What is the Supplementary Round? • Students once again list from a smaller listing of schools their choices in order of preference. New schools will be available at this time
What is the Appeals Process? • CANNOT APPEAL until you accept a seat in a school by returning the application. Most appeals are made because a student is selected into a school that is too far to travel to You cannot appeal to a school if that school is not included in Round 2 of the application process.
Summary Students may apply to both Public High Schools (free) and Parochial High School (charge tuition) Public High Schools allow for one specialized match, 6 LaGuardia matches and one program match of 12 program choices. Many various ways children are selected. Catholic HS 3 choices Students accepted based upon Academic Record and TACHS test. Private Catholic Schools have separate applications
Good Luck • We pray each day that students will make wise decisions for HS • Try and attend Sunday Mass with your child or at least encourage them to go • Many pitfalls at this critical time in life – we all need God’s help and guidance
