Classifying. The Alun School. When we CLASSIFY things, we put them into CLASSES or GROUPS. There are lots of different ways we can do this, depending on the things that we want to classify. How could you classify your CD collection?. IDEAS. Which ones do they use in HMV?.

  2. When we CLASSIFY things, we put them into CLASSES or GROUPS. • There are lots of different ways we can do this, • depending on the things that we want to classify.

  3. How could you classify your CD collection? IDEAS Which ones do they use in HMV?

  4. Put these items into 2 groups

  5. How did YOU do it? • You could have used: • Colour? • Wheels or no wheels? • Large or small objects? • OR EVEN if they are related to WATER or not!!!!

  6. There’s no CORRECT answer! • When you classify things, it can be done in lots of different ways. • Scientists like to classify different materials into groups. • They do this by looking at their PROPERTIES! e.g.

  7. What does it look like?

  8. Can you see through it?

  9. What does it feel like?

  10. Will it bend or break?

  11. Is it magnetic?

  12. Will it stretch? Can you squash it?

  13. Is it hard or soft?

  14. Is it heavy or light?

  15. Will electricity pass through it?

  16. The Challenge! • In your groups you have to put the objects into GROUPS. • You can use ANY method you like, but you must NOT have more than 4 different groups. • GO!!
