Background info • Born in New Hampshire on March 2, 1942 • Dyslexic • Failed at first but persevered • The World According to Garp is his most popular writing • Complains about Reagan in book which was written during the Reagan presidency • Moved to Canada to avoid draft for Vietnam much like Wheelright in the book

Faith • “…He is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany (Irving 1).” • Irving was a evangelistic Christian with a outgoing perspective of the Gospel. • Was a faith filled person all his life and really reflects in everyone of his writing. • Speaks of tragedy and how faith will pull you out

  5. Summary • Owen kills John’s mother by a bat • Owen becomes valedictorian in HS while John struggles • Owen gets expelled for fake ID’s and vandalism • They both go to University of New Hampshire • They save children at an airport by jumping on a grenade. Owen died. John moved to Canada
