  1. A Web Lesson by Evelyn Shipman Ben Hulse School Imperial, CA My Oscar Winning Slide Show

  2. I used this lesson to enable fifth grade students to: • Produce a multimedia presentation using Kid Pix Studio Deluxe. • Illustrate a favorite or award winning book. • Build and sharpen skills necessary to use electronic media effectively

  3. These are the Standards my Lesson Addressed English Language Arts – Writing Strand Fifth Grade 1.4 Create simple documents by using electronic media and employing organizational features(e.g. passwords, entry and pull-down menus, word searches, thesaurus, spell checks). 1.6 Edit and revise manuscripts to improve the meaning and focus of writing by adding, deleting, consolidating, clarifying, and rearranging words and sentences.

  4. My Instructional Objectives for this Lesson • Using Kid Pix Studio Deluxe students will create a multimedia presentation effectively combining graphics and text in an informative, attractive layout. Assessment by teacher/student developed rubric. • Students will demonstrate skill in using graphic production tools available in Kid Pix Program. Measured by pre and post checklist. • Students will increase skills in using pull-down menu features (i.e. save, edit, font changes) and in use of word processing feature of this software. Measured by teacher observation. • Students will demonstrate skill in summarizing significant events and details of the selected book and will articulate clearly the situations, setting, characters and plots using appropriate descriptive language. Measured by score on rubric.

  5. This was our timeline of activities

  6. This is how our 20 students did on the Pre and Post Tests

  7. This is how our 20 students scored on the rubric assessing our final presentations

  8. A few of my conclusions • The finished slide show product was a great motivator for students to become more skillful in using the graphics tools in Kid Pix. • Being able to summarize important details and present them in a coherent, logical manner is a skill which must be addressed more with my students. • This activity is a great “warm-up” for Hyperstudio and PowerPoint. • Students accomplished the standards outlined in the project while increasing their technology skills AND found the process stimulating and enjoyable. (Measured by teacher judgment!!)

  9. How would I extend the value of this experience for my students? • Do this more than once during the year. • Try students working in groups. • Use this form of reporting in other areas of the curriculum, i.e. science, social studies • Try to communicate with other students using the same program
