Updates E-BioSci & BIOME • European response to PubMed Central • BIOME and EDINA bid to provide cross-searching and the delivery of BIOME data to the E-BioSci life science Internet portal • Led by EMBO and EBI • Bid was successfully funded – now at the contract negotiation stage
Updates: Virtual Training Suite Virtual Training Suite http://www.vts.rdn.ac.uk/ Launch • May 8th • “Virtual launch” at 6 venues across the UK – London, Bristol, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Manchester and Leeds • Launch of BIOME authored tutorials, including Internet for Nature and Internet for Agriculture, Food and Forestry • Lunchtime tea, cakes and champagne • Audio link up
Updates: METLA METLA • BIOME is working in collaboration with the Global Forestry Information Service (GFIS) • METLA signed up as TIP • Long term plan is for BIOME to be a regional node of GFIS
Updates: Schemas MEDCertain • Potential collaborating partners in testing metadata schemas US metadata bid • Bid was resubmitted to the US National Library of Medicine in February this year, on “Metadata for a global distributed knowledgebase” Brussels workshop • June – “Workshop on quality criteria for health related websites”
Updates: Natural Selection FENSCORE • Federation for Natural Sciences Collections Research • National database of natural science collections • Potential cross searching with Natural Selection • Their Z39.50 server is currently broken BIOSIS • Meeting to discuss possible use of thesaurus and further collaborations • Cross searching as part of the portals initiative
Updates: portalisation Portalisation • Part 1 – research phase to end October 2001 • Part 2 – implementation phase to start Nov 2001 • Aim to be cross-searching an external data source by the end of next year • Potential targets include EDINA BIOSIS, MEDLINE, CAB Abstracts

Updates: Technical Z39.50 • BIOME now has a supported Z39.50 service in line with the RDN’s plans New interface • Plans for revised interface in 2002, possibly following SOSIG (Yahoo-style) pattern. Eases ‘sub-gateway’ provision and provides common RDN house style Dewey • Cross-searching beyond BIOME dependent on Dewey; Renardus project investigating problems
