DYI – copycat your favourite shirt! ByDjongi
., Copycat your favourite shirt! • Turninside out thefabric, alsoyourshirt, layitoneachother. I foldedthefabricinhalf, becasethe body of myshirt is made out of onepieceso I don’thavetomatchitlater; • Myshirt is an assimetricalone! I used 2 m of fabric, pins and mysewingmachine!
., Pin it all around • Pin, pin, pin….. • Mark theoriginalshirt line with a special marker, orchalk, a driedsmallpiece of soap, orjust a simplepencil – allaround. • Makesurethefabric is notwrinkled…..
., Cut it out! • Take the scissiors and slowly cut it around • I left from marked line around 1,5-2 cm
., Sleeves • The sleeves on my original shirt are attached separately, so I follow the original patten and mark my fabric on both sides as this…
., Time to sew now! • Beforeyou start, makesureto mark theneck line & thearmholessomehow (wewillnotsewtherthepiecestogether!). I usuallyputonbothsidesonthefabricsomesign…. • Sewaround…… I usestraightstitches….
., Both fabrics are attached now • This is one of the arm holes. Here I will later on attach the tiny parts.
., Sides • This is how my new shirt looks like on the sides. • I have enough space to make a security zig-zag still, because I do not have an overlock machine.
., Zig-zag…….. • I use for the sides approx the middle of the scale
., Zig-zag the sides…. • I want to do a perfect job, so I do both materials separately. • From the sewed-in straigh stich, approx 1 cm. • You can see I still have some material – this could be cut off later.
., What we have till now? • We have a cutted out, sewed around almost ready NEW favourite shirt! • With red arrows is marked what I have sewed together till now.
., Cutting out thebottom part of thesleeves • I measured how long they are…. • As you see, these are made of one part, they have onlyone hem on the side … I will do the same!
., Bottom sleeves • From the leftover fabric I will make the small sleeves • Always check you are folding the right way – turn it out, you can mark the back part….
., Pin, cut and mark wherewillthey be connectedtothe body – I simplyusearrows….
., Safety stitch again…. • Put your machine on zig-zag again. • Go around on both sides – one will be connected to the body, the other will be at the wrist….
., Wrist side of sleaves • Fold fabriclikeonthepicture, pin it! • I willmake a nicefinishing of thesleeves, justlikeontheoriginalone! • Changethemachineto a straight stich, wheremyfingerpoints (a tiny bit closetothezig-zag) will be thefirststraightstitch. • Sewitaroundonbothsleavesyouhave!
., The nice finish of the sleeves • Whenthefirstone is ready, makeanotherone (ontheotherside of thezig-zag) • Youwillgetthesameasonthepicturefromthe right (front) side of thematerial. • Optional: youcansimplymakeonezig-zag and fold twotimes – this I did’twantedtodo, becausemyfabric is a cotton, elastickind and itmayturntoomuch, twist, and itwon’t be nicelooking….
., Neck line • I layed the original shirt underneath my new one – to keep the same shape of the neck line and I pinned it around, carefully .
., Preattyneck line…. I didthesameaswiththe end of thesleeves….
., Howtoconnectsleaveswiththe body…..? • Ok, this is not that hard! • We have this: on the left side is the body of the shirt, and the right one is the sleeve….
., Attaching… • Turninside-out ONLY thesleeve! • Makesurebothhemsmeetonthe top whenyoupushbothpartstotallyinsideeachother – I alwayscheckthemarkedlines…. • Wheremyhand is, therewill be bothmaterialssewedtogether. • Onthesmallsleevepiece - what is almost insidethebiggerone – thesticking out part is whereapproxmyelbowwill be, thismeansthe part that is insidenowiswheremywristwill be. • Makeonetrybeforeyousewittogether: pin ittemporary, turnit out and youwillsee….
., A tricky part…. • Whenyouattachit, watch out tosewittogetheronlytillwheremyfingerpoints. Ifyou go furtherthatthispoint, youwon’t be ableto fold back thematerial, and makethefinishingstitchnicely…
., Howto pin thesides… Firstpic: top materialtooneside; secondpic: thetinyonetotheother…
., Body+sleeve attaching • Sewtogetherbothmaterials, followthe line thatyoumarked • The attachedsleevewill be in a constantuse, so I decidedtomake a securitystitchwithazig-zagonmymachine – and thistime I sewedtogetherallthematerials = the body and thesleevesinone, attachedtoeachother. • I made evensomething more, I went 2 timesaround!
., The devis is inthesmalldetails! • I love my original shirt, but I always mark my new clothes which is the back part ;) • I use other fabric, make a small tag and attach it, to the proper back part!
., Final cut! • Whenready, layyour NEW shirt, and cut out thestickingsmallsides. Makesureyouleave a bit, ifyoumayhaveto fix it, orjustre-enforceanysideto be abletodoit! • I usuallyleavearound 1 cm, ifitflees a bit, I stillhaveplaceto add a newsecuritystitch!
., Ready!!!!!! • Asyousee, this is a multiplekind of shirt, youcanwearitwithjeans, or a skirt! • The sleevescould be foldedup, orsimplywrinkledup. The neckcould be anywhere – inthemiddle, ontheside. The body part could be straight, twisted etc…. • Beforeyouwearit, needto be washed out, sothefabric – ifyoupulledittoomuch – will go back toit’splace.
