  1. ELEMENT SILICON Angelique Brooks Chemistry 2nd Hr December 16, 2009

  2. Who am I? My name is Silicon I’m Latin. I'm the element that doesn’t have properties of metal(nonmetal).I'm inert, but is attacked by dilute alkali and halogens. I'm one of the most widely used elements. I range from liquid to hard solids. I make up 25.7 % of earths Crust. I’m important to the nature of animals and plants, I'm also part of the ingredient of steel.

  3. The Beginning Antoine Lavoisier Silicon was identified by Antoine Lavoisier in 1787 but rediscovered by Jacob Berzelius(An Swedish Chemist. ) Jacob Berzelius

  4. My Appearance • Amorphous form brown powder • Crystalline form • Gray • Crystal Structure: • Cubic

  5. Where Could I be?? This element could be found in the stars and the sun. Reason being its carbide is an important abrasive and is used in lasers to produce coherent light. Silicon is located in groups 13,14,15,16,and 17 of the Periodic Table. It can also be found in oxide and silicates.

  6. Silicon • Density-2.33 • Melting Point-1410 c • Boiling Point-2355c • Atomic Weight- 28 • Protons-14 • Electons-14 • Neutrons-14

  7. Common Use Of Me The Good The bad • Semi-Conductors • Glass • Concrete • Brick • Pottery • Silicones • Smoke Screens • Silicones Disease • Respiratory Disease • Lung Disease • Breast

  8. The Effect Silicones Disease This disease is caused by using large amounts of silicon. It comes from the lungs. Most construction workers are able to catch this. Breast cancer is another effect of this disease.

  9. What Am I Worth Regular grade silicon (99%) cost about 50$ /g .Silicon 99.9% pure cost is about 50$/lb .Hyper pure silicon may cost as much as 100$ /oz

  10. My Summary In conclusion this element helps me in my everyday life with light and construction work. This element helps the environment with plants and animals. Silicon can be used in so many different ways. I learned something new about this element and that’s that its causes a disease.
