Technological and economical factors were not the only reasons for the lack of weapons. Bad decisions made by the head of the ordnance department, James Wolfe Ripley, held back the advancement of the Union’s arsenal. He received much criticism, being accused of having hostility toward new innovations, particularly to breech loading weapons.
The small arms in the civil war were used if another person tries to charge at them and there rifle is being reloaded Some of the small arms consist of the seven shot Spencer and the twenty shot Henry. There are others like the .58 or the .577 carbine rifles. There are many revolvers like the Allen, the Remington, the Colt, and the lefkucher.
The rifles that they used come in various types and sizes the all cost about 12.00 dollars a gun. There is the single shot muzzle loader. The .54 cal, the .44 cal, .52 cal.The .36cal.
There were many imported weapons that had came from places like France they were the guns that were pin fire and they are the .45 cal and the 5 shot “Kerr” revolvers. “Kerr” shot 9 .45 cal bullets in addition to the .63 cal shot gun charge.
The confederates made there own revolvers and there was a problem with the materials that they had, steel was very had to get and brass and iron were often substituted.
The most successful confederate gun smith was the firm of Griswold and Gunnison. They produced nearly 3600 pistols between the dates of July of 1862 and November of 1864 in GriswoldVille near Macon. the gun was the .26 cal brass framed copies of the colt navy.
