  1. Planning The Electrical System 4 Requirements for a well planned system: • Safe • Adequate for convenience • Efficient • Expandable

  2. Types of Branch Circuits • Individual • General Purpose • Small Appliance • Laundry • Bedroom • Def: Branch Circuit- circuit conductors between the final overcurrent device protecting the circuit and the outlets installed.

  3. NEC Requirements

  4. Individual Circuits • Motors ½ horsepower and larger • Equipment in which operation and/or temperature is critical • All 240 volt equipment NEC: 210.23

  5. Small Appliance Circuits • Two or more small appliance circuits required • Must be 20 amp • No other outlets may be supplied (Lighting) • May supply other outlets in the same kitchen or specified room ( pantry, breakfast room, dining room, other similar area). • Cannot serve more than one kitchen. NEC: 210.11 & 210.52(B)

  6. Laundry Circuits • At least one laundry circuit is required by NEC • Must be 20 amp • The circuit shall not serve any other outlets NEC: 210.11 & 210.52(F)

  7. Bathroom Circuit • At least one laundry circuit is required by NEC • Must be 20 amp • The circuit shall not serve any other outlets except in same bathroom. NEC: 210.11 & 210.52(D)

  8. General purpose circuits • All lighting outlets must be served with general purpose circuits • All receptacles not on an appliance, laundry, or individual circuit • May be 15 or 20 amp • Bedroom circuit must be Arc-Fault protected NEC: 210.23, 220.14

  9. Types of Outlets • Lighting Outlets • Convenience Outlets • Special Purpose Outlets Def: Outlet- a point in the wiring system at which current is taken to supply equipment

  10. Lighting Outlet Requirements • At Least one wall switch controlled lighting outlet shall be installed in each: • habitable room, • bathroom, • hallway, • stairways (at both levels if over 6 steps), • attached garage • detached garage with electrical power • exterior light at grade level. NEC: 210.70

  11. Lighting Outlet Requirements • At least one lighting outlet containing a switch or controlled by a switch is required in • Attic • Under floor space • Utility room • Basement NEC: 210.70

  12. Lighting Load • A unit load of not less than that specified in 05 NEC Table 220.12

  13. Lighting Location • No NEC recommendations • Good lighting is a practical combination of: • Lamp height • Light output (lumens) • Lamp spacing • Correct color • Fixture style (directed lighting) • See 14th Edition Agriculture Wiring Handbook for specific agricultural applications

  14. Switch Location • No NEC recommendations • Common Practices: • Install Switch on latch side of door • Install switch in same room as light • Locate switches about 48 inches above floor normally • Locate switches as high as can be reached conveniently for buildings housing livestock. • Install switches at each principle entrance (use of three-way switches is recommended for multiple entrances to same room) • See 14th Edition Agriculture Wiring Handbook

  15. General Receptacle Outlet Requirements IN EVERY KITCHEN,FAMILY ROOM, DINING ROOM, PARLOR, LIBRARY,DEN SUNROOM, BEDROOM, RECREATION ROOM, OR SIMILAR ROOM RECEPTACLES SHALL BE INSTALLED ACCORDING TO 05 NEC ARTICLE 210.52 • No point measured horizontally along the floor line in any wall space can be more than 6 feet from a receptacle outlet • Wall space- any unbroken space of 2 feet or more NEC 210.52(A)
