Think-Pair-Share • What are koru? • Where do they come from? • Who are they special to? Why? • Where have you seen koru before? • What is something you know about koru? • What is something you would like to know about koru?
What does koru mean? The koru (Māori for "loop”[) is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfolding silver fern frond and symbolizes new life, growth, strength and peace. The circular shape of the koru helps to give the idea of continual movement while the inner coil suggests a return to the point it started.
Who is it important too? It is an important symbol in Māori art, carving and tattoos.
How to draw koru correctly? • They must always grow from somewhere (never draw in middle of page) • When joining them, you must never join them from the head.
