We are Learning. How to write paragraphs using P.Q.E.R. When writing Critical Essays about a text you have studied, you must make sure that you structure your paragraphs using P.Q.E.R. The only exceptions are your Introduction and your Conclusion which are written in a different way.

  1. We are Learning... How to write paragraphs using P.Q.E.R

  2. When writing Critical Essays about a text you have studied, you must make sure that you structure your paragraphs using P.Q.E.R. • The only exceptions are your Introduction and your Conclusion which are written in a different way. • P.Q.E.R is not optional.

  3. Point. • This is also called the topic sentence. • Refer to part two of the essay question (paraphrase). • Briefly mention what you will be discussing in the rest of the paragraph. • Avoid clumsy and repetitive phrases (e.g: “Another quote...”; “One of the ways...”; “Another technique...”).

  4. Quote • Provide 2 quotes from the text. • The quotes should be relevant to the essay question. • The quotes should support your topic sentence. • Put your quotes in context.

  5. Explain • Explain what your quote shows. • Analyse and evaluate the techniques used. What is the impact? How effective? • Make sure that everything you say is relevant to the essay question AND is relevant to your topic sentence. • Try to mention how the quote relates to the main concerns (theme and message) of the text.

  6. Relate • Sum up what you have been discussing in the paragraph. • Show how it relates to part two of the essay question.
