  2. Motivation • Analyze the vital records database • Identify trends related to causes of death • Compare Evanston data to other similarly • communities and national figures • Assist with addressing the health needs of the community

  3. Objectives • Represents City of Evanston Vital Records data: • on deaths, • death rates, • age-adjusted rates, and • leading causes of death for calendar years 2008 and 2009 • characteristics (age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin)

  4. Numbers versus Rates • Numbers: determine the burden of a health problem in a community; takes the population size into account • Death rates: number of vital events/ number of people at risk of these events; accounts for differences in population characteristics • Age-adjusted rates: death rates increase with increasing age; allow comparisons between different areas and over various periods of time;

  5. Trends in numbers and rates for Evanston • Number of Deaths for 2009: 947 • Number of Deaths for 2008: 960 • Evanston death rate of 1216.15, (5.6 percent lower than the rate of 1288.09 in 2008) • Age-adjusted death rate of 1064.08, 18.8 percent lower than the 2008 rate of 1309.94

Significant changes in age-related death rates • The relative magnitudes of significant changes in age-adjusted death rates by sex and race are: • Males (18.9 percent decrease); Females (15.8 percent decrease) • White males (39.3 percent decrease); White females ( 38.9 percent decrease) • Black males (21.1 percent decrease); Black females (19.8 percent increase)

The magnitude of the significant changes in mortality for • Evanston by age group is: • Under 5 year (49.9 percent decrease) • 5-14 years (180 percent increase) • 15-24 years (1.9 percent decrease) • 25-34 years (2.5 percent increase) • 35-44 years (4.7 percent decrease) • 45-54 years (3.8 percent decrease) • 55-64 years (6.7 percent decrease) • 65-74 years (4.2 percent decrease) • 75-84 years (13.4 percent increase) • 85 years and over (55.9 percent decrease)

  8. Causes of death • the causes of death, ICD-9, by the World Health Organization • group ICD codes into more general categories • the National Center for Health Statistics provides one of the most commonly used classification systems, grouped into 73 separate groups for ICD-9

Causes of death • The leading causes of death for Evanston in 2009 remained the same as in 2008 for the 12 leading causes although several causes exchanged ranks 1 Diseases of the heart 2 Malignant neoplasms 3 Pneumonia and Influenza 4 Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis 5 Symptoms, signs and ill-defined conditions 6 Accidents and adverse effects 7 Diabetes mellitus 8 Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and allied conditions 9 Cerebrovascular diseases 10 Congenital anomalies 11 Suicide 12 Alzheimer disease

Causes of death From 2008 to 2009, the death rate for Evanston declined significantly for 4 of the 12 leading causes of death: Accidents and adverse effects (21.5 percent) Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and allied conditions ( 60 percent) Congenital anomalies ( 33.7 percent) Alzheimer disease ( 36.2 percent) The death rate for Evanstonincreased significantly from 2008 to 2009 for six leading causes: Diseases of the heart ( 8.8 percent) Malignant neoplasms ( 2.1 percent) Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis ( 47.4 percent), Symptoms, signs and ill-defined conditions ( 19.8 percent), Cerebrovascular diseases ( 101 percent), and Suicide ( 67.5 percent). The observed changes in the death rates for Evanston from 2008 to 2009 were not significant for Pneumonia and Influenza, and Diabetes mellitus.
