Metabolic and Nutritional Diseases • What is matabolism? • It’s the process by which the body converts the energy in food into energy the body can use. • This process happens after digestion.
Metabolic Disease • If a body can’t metabolize something it needs to survive, then you have a metabolic disease. • Some problems begin before birth and sometimes after. • Heredity, Drugs, Medication, and Diet are the main risk factors.
Common Metabolic Diseases • PKU: Heriditary and person needs to follow a low protein diet • Diabetes: Can be caused for a number of reasons. Your body’s pancrease doesn’t work properly to metabolize glucose. • Rickets: Too little Vitamin D and too little Vitamin A causes blindness, but too much V-A causes liver disease and hair loss.
Nutrition and Health • The more balanced you diet the less of a chance you will get a metabolic disease • Eating the right amount of food is also important because eating too much can lead to disease • Choosing foods low in fat, sugar and salt helps. • Exercise is also part of the equation;-)
