FOOD IN EAST AFRICA • world’s worst food crisis is being felt in East Africa, in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. • the crisis has been criticized as avoidable and man-made • high food prices have forced food out of the reach of many people • while conflict in Somalia exacerbated the situation • 12 million people are in dire need of food, clean water, and basic sanitation • Loss of life on a massive scale is a very real risk, and the crisis is set to worsen over the coming months, particularly for pastoralist communities
Food issue in France • Surging food prices have come back into the spotlight • after they helped fuel protests that toppled Tunisia's president in January • have spilled over to Egypt and Jordan • 925million hungry people in the world in 2010
Food in Latin America • prices of corn, wheat, soybeans, sugar, dairy products, meat and fish have risen by more than 35 percent. • reduced agricultural production by 50 percent and caused an explosion in food prices • incomes collapse for rural communities that have no savings of wealth to convert to cash • the government has encouraged food producers to shift from the production of dietary staples, such as beans and corn • commodities in greater international demand, • including animal fodder
