Just the before column. • Humans have no affect on their surroundings. • History affects all people. • Language and religious beliefs are part of culture. • There is only one type of government in the world. • Civic participation means being concerned with and involved in issues related to your community, state, country, or world. • Economy deals with money.
Do Now • Report to assigned seat and take out the blue packet that you were given yesterday in class. Quietly, discuss the statements from the Anticipation Guide with the person sitting next to you.

Chapter 0- Lesson #1 • Vocabulary- Complete the lesson vocabulary pages in your packet for each of the 5 strands of social studies.
Do Now 8-30-13 Complete the vocabulary for the Government and Economy Strands in the first 10 minutes of class.
Geography Strand Vocabulary • Geography- the study of the Earth’s physical and human features • Relative Location- where something is in relation to other places. Example: Lancaster is located east of Harrisburg • Absolute Location- the exact location of a place is its global address, where it is on the whole earth Example: Harrisburg is located at 40 degrees North Latitude and 76 degrees West Longitude
Geography Strand Vocabulary Continued • Physical Feature- landforms, bodies of water, climate, soil and plant and animal life. • Human Feature- Buildings, roads, and people are some of a place’s human features. • Region- an area on earth whose features make it different from other areas. • Cause- an event or action that makes something else happen. • Effect- the result of an event or action
History Strand Vocabulary • History- the study of people and the events of the past. • Chronology- the record of events in the order in which they happened. • Oral History- Accounts of events told by people who did not have a written language or write down what happened. • Historical Empathy -understanding the actions and feelings of people from other times and places.
Culture Strand Vocabulary • Culture- a unique way of life that sets a group of people apart from others. • Society- an organized group of people that are living under a set of rules and traditions. • Heritage- A set of ideas that have been passed down from one generation to another.
Government Strand Vocabulary • Government- An organized system that groups use make laws and decisions. • Civic Participation- Concern with and involvement in the community, state, and world.
Economy Strand Vocabulary Economy- the way that people use resources to meet their needs. Economics- the study of the way that goods and wealth are produced, distributed and used.

Jigsaw Take your notes out from yesterday! • Take your notes and book and gather with your row. • Reread your section. • Share your notes with the group. • Decide the facts that you are going to share with the rest of the class. Everyone needs to write the notes you will present to your new group on the handout. • Each PERSON will share their information with the new group. The rest of the group will write the notes for each strand on their handout.

Reporting Groups • Get into your new groups that were assigned to you last week. • Each member of the group will teach the group their strand of social studies. • Make sure that you are very clear and give all details about your strand. History • History- the events that happened in the past. • History affects all people. • Chronology is the time order in which things happen. • Perspectives- different points of view • historical empathy- ability to understand people of the past in their own frame of reference.
Civics and Government • Government- system of leaders and laws that help people live safely together in a community, state, or country. • Civic participation means being concerned with and involved in issues related to your community, state, country, or world.
Economics • Economy deals with money. • A society must have an economy. • Economics is the study of the way that goods and wealth are produced, distributed, and used in the world.
Culture and Society • Culture- ways of acting, speaking, and believing. • Society- human group • heritage- wealth of ideas that have been passed down through their history

Essential Question Answer The five strands of Social Studies that help us learn about the world are geography, history, civics and government, culture and society, and economics. Geography helps us learn about different places and locations on earth and how people interact with their environment. When we study history, we learn about important people and events that have had an effect on our lives today. By studying government, we learn about different types of governments and leaders from other countries. Culture is the one strand that takes a look at different people from all over the
