Long Haul Ethernet (1) andTest of CERN grid software (2) David Simonsen Project manager, UNI-C Denmark
Network status, Denmark • Government funding ended 1st of jan. 2003 • Now deploying upgrade (622 Mbps + 1 x 100 Mbps 2 x 1 Gbps (Ethernet)) • One cross country, dark fiberpair for testing • No production traffic on fibers
10 GE, non regenerated • Goal: • To test the range of 10 Gbps Ethernet • Experimental constrains: • Pure Ethernet only • (no SDH/SONET or other desturbances) • No signal regeneration (optical amplification only) • Standard single mode fibres • Why? • To make 10 GE more accesible (cheaper)
10 GE-project partners • COM Center, Denmarks Tech. University • Martin Nordal Pedersen • ESTA, ’Enabling Switching at 10 Giga and Above’ at CERN • Mikkel Olesen • Global Connect A/S • Forskningsnettet (NREN) • UNI-C
BATM T6 8 x 1 Gbps (850 nm) 1 x 10 Gbps (1550 nm) Zenpack Optillion 40 km-range
Results • A 525 km long, pure Ethernet connection was set up at 10 Gbps • A Bit Error Rate of ~10E-14 • No special tailored equipment used
Grid software experiment Goals • To get first hand experience with the technology • To test the Grid-software from CERN • To make the most complicated setup • To rate the highest throughput possible
Project partners • COM Center, Denmarks Tech. University • ESTA at CERN • Global Connect A/S • Forskningsnettet (NREN) • UNI-C • Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen • NorduGrid • Nordic Data Grid Facility • Southern University of Denmark • University of Aalborg • Computer Science Dep. at Uni. of Copenhagen • High Performance Computing to the North, Umeå • University of Trondheim, Norway • Centre For Subatomic Research, University of Alberta, Canada
Results • Maximum throughput: 3.3 gbps (link Odense – Lyngby) • We got first hand experience with both software and network setups and problems • A very complicated setup was atchieved
