5th Grade Expectations • Behavior emulating the pillars of character • On-time arrival and homework completion • Compliance to rules • Positive role models within our school community
Code of Cooperation • Work as a team • Be quiet • Be clean • Stay focused • Be respectful • Finish work on time • Be helpful
Co-Teaching • In Reading: • Students will be given an assessment • Instructional decisions will be made based on the assessment results • Students may work with different teachers throughout the day, depending on their needs • PDSA
ReadingThe only way to become a better reader is to read Please help your child • Provide access to a variety of texts • Help your child make time to read daily • Show interest in what your child is reading
5th Grade Reading Goal • By the end of the school year, 100% of 5th grade students will meet or exceed the 5th grade reading benchmark level as measured by a reading level of V on the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Test. This test will be administered three times a year, with the last test given in May.
Reading • 10 genres 40 books (Students have a contract for each trimester) • Informational-General • Poetry • Historical Fiction • Mystery • Fantasy • Science Fiction • Traditional Literature • Biography/Autobiography • Memoir • Realistic Fiction
Reading • By the end of the year, fifth grade students will read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, and informational text at the high end of grade 5 text complexity band independently and proficiently. Iowa Common Core will be our focus during instructional time during literature and informational units.
Collaborative Teaching in Everyday Math • Fractions fluency in + - and understanding in x / • Division with two digit divisors, fluency in whole numbers and decimal operations. • Volume • Use of math in routine activities • Problem solving and questioning
5th Grade Math Goal • By the end of the year, 100% of students in the 5th grade class will achieve the 5th grade Iowa Core expectations on the district test with 80% accuracy.
Collaborative Teaching of Words Their Way • New word sort each week • Tested on the sixth day
Assignments • One book talk a trimester ( fiction or Non-fiction), third trimester one of each • Correct spelling, neatness, and best efforts are expected on all assignments • Expected on the due date for full credit • Long term assignments/projects/research papers. • Opinion Piece • Explanatory/Informational text • Narrative
Grading Scale • While a number grade is given for assignments, the most important result of all instruction is what the student has learned. • 93%-100% • 85%-92% • 75%-84% • 74% and below
Homework • Math • Students need to read at least 30 minutes a night • WTW • Calls home • Research projects
