An Emergency! • 70% to 80% of our children abandon their faith after they high school • No church is immune, even those with excellent ministers, programs and ministries dedicated to serving youth • We simply cannot afford to continue doing the things we have been doing, the way we have been doing them and expect different results • Our church has not done enough to equip families to instill faith at home • Our families have not been consistently fostering faith at home
How did we get here? • We have gotten comfortable in a land of plenty – plenty to do, have, be and achieve; as a result we have generally forgotten about God • When we don’t have the time or forget to fulfill a responsibility, we outsource it for someone else to do for us • We often compartmentalize our Christianity – church becomes doing rather than being • When we don’t have time to teach our children about God, we take them to church and expect the church to do it for us – “Drop-off Mentality”
An Opportunity! • We have an overwhelming potential to influence our children’s relationship with God! • Who has the most influence? Mothers – 85% Fathers – 64% Minister – 60% Grandparents – 36% Bible Class Teachers – 31% Church Camp – 30%
When the church and the home work together we have a tremendous influence on our children’s faith!
Intentionally Spiritual Parenting Deut. 6:4-9 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

We must be consistent and watch for teachable moments! • Heart – our Christianity must visible in every aspect of our lives; our children will note any hypocrisy and it will be a deterrent! – Ps. 119:11 • Diligent – we must have a sense of urgency; Christian parenting is proactive not reactive • Pray, Read and Meditate upon God’s word, as a family, on a consistent basis. • Sitting, walking, bedtime, mornings – I would add eating and driving – these are all opportune times to teach our children about God. • Make Christ the very foundation of your life, the source from which everything else emanates!
Spiritual success requires family planning and action • We find time to do the things we really want to do • We prioritize things by urgency • Will it take the loss of our children’s faith to give use that sense of urgency? • We would do anything to help our children if they were sick or hurt • Our crisis is much worse because it is spiritual – Matt. 16:26
