The Man He Was • Crowned by Pope on Christmas Day in 800 A.D. • Great warlord, defeated many Germanic tribes. • Created a little “renaissance”. • Education was important. • Died January 28, 814 A.D. Charlemagne is Crowned Emperor Charlemagne Dies
Key Things about Medieval Europe • Warrior –to– Landowner • Wealth = Land • Land needs workers • HUGE peasant (serf) class • Small middle class
The Real Feudal System • Christendom divided into large lands • Called fiefs • Fiefs also called feuda • Kings had massive amount of land • Kings had lots of lords who swore fealty to them • Lords had vassals who swore fealty to them • Peasants were around only to work the fields Rome falls
Moving Up in the Feudal System • To get more land, conquering was only option • Being Peaceful meant less powerful Powerful Feudal System
A Uniting Force • After the fall of the Roman Empire, there was severe political fragmentation • One force united Europe: The Roman Catholic Church • From 500 to 1000, there was amazing growth in the power of the church Power of the church
