  3. GCSE GCSE The RUHR is a huge industrial area of Western Germany containing many of the Germanys main industries including factories and steel works. Germany relies on this region for its economy to work well.

  4. TASK: The Ruhr invasion would lead to a chain of events in 1923 which would lead to disaster… and some would argue eventually to Hitler. We have to know these events well and be able to explain them Use pgs 14&15 of your text book to fill in your storyboard GCSE GCSE

  5. Germany’s economy was badly weakened by the Treaty of Versailles. It had lost a large amount of its Population, Land & Industry and was expected to pay huge REPARATIONS. GCSE GCSE

  6. In January 1923 the German Government claimed they COULD NOT pay their REPARATIONS The FRENCH and BELGIANS did not believe the Germans. They INVADED THE RUHR and took ‘goods’ to pay what was owed. GCSE GCSE

  8. The German Government ordered its citizens NOT to cooperate with the French This was known as –’PASSIVE RESISTANCE’ GCSE GCSE

  9. The French were tough with the strikers. Over 100 were killed and 150,000 thrown out of their homes GCSE GCSE

  10. The German Government promised to pay the strikers BUT Because the Rich Ruhr was occupied there was little Tax for the Government GCSE GCSE

  11. To pay the strikers the Government printed huge amounts of money – BUT this led to problems. GCSE GCSE

  12. Strikers spent their money quickly. They were being paid for NOT working. Shopkeepers soon began to raise prices GCSE GCSE

  13. The more money the Government printed the more prices rose! GCSE GCSE

  14. Workers were soon being paid TWICE a day. They carried their money around in wheelbarrows! GCSE GCSE
