Massachusetts Bay Colony 1630 • Founded by Puritans for religious reasons. • Puritans wanted to “purify” the Church of England. • Puritans were persecuted in England for their beliefs. • Many Puritans were wealthy and powerful.

Government of the Massachusetts Bay Colony • An elected General Court dealt with major issues. • Less important issues were decided in town meetings. • Only white men, over 21, who owned property, and were in good standing in the Puritan Church could vote.
The Great Migration 1629-1640 • Thousands came to Massachusetts Bay fleeing persecution and poverty in England. • Many of the newcomers were not Puritans. • This influx of non-Puritans weakened political strength of Puritans.
Salem Witch Hysteria • In 1692 a group of young girls began accusing people in the town of Salem, Mass. of witchcraft. • After all was said and done, 19 people were hanged, 1 crushed to death and 4 died in jail. The Trial of George Jacobs
