Who settled & why? • Pilgrims! Wanted to ESCAPE the Church of England (Anglican Church) More tolerant of religious differences Men brought their wives & children. Formed close communities • Puritans Wanted to PURIFY the Church of England (Anglican Church) Stricter when it came to Christianity “pure-itan” Families came over together. Formed close communities

How did this affect everything else? • Weather could not sustain large plantations • Extremely cold winters • Native Americans Willingly accepted help from Native Americans Learned farming and fishing techniques Traded manufactured goods for furs & farming hints

Pilgrims/Puritans colonized knowing the hard work they’d have to complete New England colonies had many people who were skilled in trades: • Fishing • Growing • Building homes/ships • Cutting down trees

Salem Witch Trials • People were wrongly accused, often by their neighbors, of being a witch • The accused would be tried based on mere here say & oftentimes would be imprisoned or executed without reliable evidence Hundreds were killed over this religious hysteria & government meddling Realized that trials must be based on valid evidence
