  2. Applicability • Appropriate when the agency recommends and the court approves the use of a trial reunification (TR) Note: Court approval means it is part of a court order

  3. Prior to Initiating The agency must consider: • Any court orders that would prohibit the use of a TR • Whether an in-home safety plan can be implemented

  4. Prior to Implementation The agency must: • Amend any court orders, if applicable • Notify all parties • Re-assess child safety • Develop an in-home safety plan

  5. Prior to Implementation (cont.) Must document a description of the following: • What actions will be taken if threats to child safety can no longer be managed • How the agency will communicate the child’s status and facilitate services to the OHC provider • The nature and frequency of any contact the OHC provider will have with the child

  6. Implementation Continuous review of the in-home safety plan requires: • F2F contact on the day the TR begins • Twice a month F2F contact • Once a month contact with service providers involved in the safety plan

  7. Timeframes Minimum of 7 days and no more than 6 months unless authorized by a court order, or for a period of time as specified in a court order

  8. How TR ends • Reunification Achieved • Reunification Not Achieved

  9. How to extend Much like annual court orders, agencies must file a request with the court with sufficient time to obtain an extension. That is, before the TR expires.

  10. What to do if a TR expires If child safety can be maintained, reunification is achieved If child safety cannot be maintained (new grounds for removal) and the child is placed back into OHC, it is considered a new placement and therefore…

  11. What to do if a TR expires (cont.) • Title IV-E eligibility must be re-established AND • New judicial determinations are required

  12. Documentation The following decisions must be documented: • Initiating • Ending • Reunifying

  13. Other Information • Child Support • Economic Support • Adoption Assistance • Social Security
